When people travel from the West Coast to the East Coast of the United States, they “fly over” a large, vast, part of the country often ignored. Flyover Clinical is located in this midsection of the nation, in beautiful Rochester, Minnesota.
The term “Flyover Country” is sometimes used pejoratively, but at Flyover Clinical, the phrase is one of distinction, honor, and pride. There is a lot of resourcefulness and ingenuity in this part of America, including a lot of high-quality medical research being done.
Some of the greatest companies and inventions in the history of medicine trace their origins to “Flyover Country”. The winters are long and cold. A lot of time is spent indoors. While trying to stay warm, people have time to think and invent.
Minnesota is also home to a number of Contract Research Organizations (CRO), both preclinical and clinical. Relationships established with these CROs as well as being strategically equidistant from both coasts, puts Flyover Clinical in the perfect location to assist medical device and pharmaceutical companies in their research needs.
Mission Statement:
Expedite delivery of novel treatments to patients by working with industry partners to ensure effective studies and high-quality data.
At Flyover Clinical, we aim to serve two groups of people. First, and most importantly are the patients. Secondly, are our industry partners and clients. We realize this runs counter to a lot of business models, but we only like to take on projects to which we have personal connections. This ensures we are keeping the needs of the patients at the forefront of our work, while also being able to offer our clients our greatest level of commitment.
Growing up in Flyover Country, my heart was set on a career in sports. I quickly learned that I was not very good, and my career plans needed to change. After completing my commitment in the United States Army, I went to college majoring in Biomedical Sciences. I have no idea why, but it was the best decision I could have made! I enjoyed learning about genetics, microbiology, human anatomy, medical terminology, and all of the other topics in medicine and science.
After earning my Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences, I started my career as a Research Technologist in Xenotransplantation, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. I was doing the same things I enjoyed in college, but now I was getting paid for it!! I soon learned the pitfalls of academic research though, as funding for my position ceased. I then pursued work in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and was introduced to the world of Contract Research Organizations (CROs) and animal research. I also learned a lot about Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), the regulatory requirements of different countries, and the processes in getting devices and medications from concept to market.
Over the next decade, I kept hearing more about clinical trials. Colleagues were talking about first-in-human studies, Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III, IDEs, and INDs. I knew I wanted to learn more. I had to see how all of the work I was doing in the preclinical arena translated to human clinical trials. I decided to pursue my Master’s of Science in Applied Clinical Research. While working in this program, I worked on managing over a dozen domestic US sites as part of a Post-Approval Registry, and then as a Clinical Research Coordinator during which I was able to see how clinical trials were conducted at the site level.
When the COVID-19 pandemic was followed by a worker shortage in the industry, I saw an unmet need in clinical research. Upon realizing that my unique skillset could not only help companies continue a path forward with their products, but also ensure that novel treatments could get to patients quicker, I set out to start up independent consulting company and Flyover Clinical was born!
